3-D Loco Log Cabins

Loco Log Cabins

3-D Loco Log Cabins

Full Day
Confident beginner to Advanced

It is time to “draw outside the lines” with this liberating crazy log cabin. We will be breaking some of the traditional rules like-- no binding. Join me in a delightful, spontaneous journey with this 3-dimensional, heavily textured and embellished project. You will be in control of the finished size of your wall hanging, though we plan to work small. The size of the blocks will be small approx. 3 1/2” and 5”, the log cabin pattern will be liberating—you will decide! You want to be comfortable with machine quilting.

Supply List – 3-D Loco Log Cabins Workshop by Wendy Butler Berns

  • Fabric for creating your strip pieced liberating little log blocks. You do not need large amounts(fat quarter sizes, large scraps), but you will want a variety. Remember the value rule, lights, mediums, darks in fun colors you will enjoy working with, maybe about 12-15 different fabrics-whatever you have room for!!
  • Machine in good working order and general sewing supplies
  • Sewing machine feet: zig zag foot, walking foot, darning foot, 1/4" foot
  • Rotary cutter, ruler, and mat
  • Fabric scissors
  • Monofilament thread
  • Cotton thread for piecing
  • Bobbins with cotton thread and a bobbin with monfilament thread
  • Schmetz Top Stitch sewing machine needles size 14 (90)
  • Iron and ironing pad-one iron for every 3 students

    For Embellishing:

  • A variety of different colors of decorative threads, cotton, or rayon or metallic threads to contrast and compliment your fabric choices
  • Small selection of yarns, heavy threads for couching and embellishing

    For Layering your project:

  • Black felt –2 to 3 12” squares,or 1/4 yard -- enough to layer your “Little Blocks” (with the finishing technique we will be using, the black felt will help contrast the blocks nicely against their background and give the 3-D look)
  • 1/2 to 3/4 yard of background fabric that will show off your “Little Blocks”
  • 1/2 to 3/4 yard of backing fabric
  • 1/2 to 3/4 yard of warm and natural batting to layer your whole cloth background

    For binding:
  • about 1 –2 yards of several types of yarn to couch your finished project

    Optional:
  • extra embellishments such as beads, charms
  • flannel for a design wall

Classroom Set Up

  • 8 foot tables at the front of the class for the instructor
  • At least 1/2 of an 8 foot table per student, so there is room for sewing machines, cutting boards, etc.
  • irons and ironing stations for every 3-4 students
  • A flannel board or bulletin board for displaying samples and viewing projects from a distance
