Brave, Bold, Beckoning Borders

Inspiration is the key ingredient to charging up the creative energy within us!
This 1/2 day workshop will explore a variety of ideas for you to add to your quilt border repertoire.’ Sometimes taking the easiest route to bordering our quilts may not be the most effective. Wendy will offer you numerous brave and courageous ideas to consider to make your borders more bold and beckoning.

There are several options available to you as you prepare for class.
Option 1: Bring sewing machine and create several sewn samples to take home
- Machine in good working order, 1/4” presser foot
- Rotary cutting supplies
- General sewing supplies and neutral cotton piecing thread
- Iron and pressing surface- one for every 3 to 4 students
- Bring several UFO’s from home that are small- between 12” up to 36”
- You could bring numerous single UFO blocks for bordering or one to two small pieced projects that have not been bordered yet.
- Approx. 1/4 yard cuts of 5 to 7 fabrics. Fabrics that complement each other, but have some contrast too. The more fabric you have, the more choices available to you in class. Draw from your stash rather than purchasing new.
- A wide variety of larger fabric scraps 5-10” That could be used for a scrap border. Be sure to include different values, different size scales etc.
1/2 yard muslin to use as a foundation for several of the border ideas
Option 2: No Sew Approach with glue stick and fabrics to create a take home reference
- Rotary cutting supplies
- Several glue sticks
- 1/2 yard of muslin to use as a foundation for your glue stick mockups or a handful of plain copy paper
- A wide variety of larger fabric scraps 5-15” that could be used for your cut and paste samples. Be sure to include different values, different size scales etc
EVERYONE who wishes, is invited to bring a UFO’s that is ready for bordering. After we have explored a variety of border ideas, the class will view the projects students bring and share bordering options together.
Classroom Set Up
- 8 foot tables at the front of the class for the instructor
- quilt rack or two if available for instructor to hang display quilts
- Projector screen and table for video/ digital projector use by instructor
- At least 1/2 of an 8 foot table per student, so there is room for sewing machines, cutting boards, etc.
- irons and ironing stations for every 3-4 students
- A flannel board or bulletin board for displaying samples and viewing projects from a distance
